For educators, the self-grading feature of Google Forms is a revelation! Crafting a quiz on Google Forms is straightforward. Here’s how:

Step 1: Start by clicking the 'Settings" tab in your form to access settings. Select “Make this a quiz”. Choose when to release scores – I prefer instantly after submission for multiple-choice. For questions demanding thorough review, like short answers, select “Later, after manual review”.

Step 2: Draft your questions and possible answers. There's flexibility to embed images either within the question or answer sections – a touch I use for a more engaging quiz. Customize your answer type – be it multiple choice, checkboxes, dropdown lists, short answers, or others. My favorites? Multiple choice, checkboxes (when there’s more than one right answer), and short answers.

Step 3: Design your answer key. Assign points to questions and select the right answer(s). For short-answer queries, define the acceptable answer range and input the right responses.

As you structure your answer key, there's a provision to embed feedback for students. While my preference leans towards feedback for incorrect submissions, there's also room to commend right answers. Feedback can range from hints for deriving the right solution to hyperlinks redirecting to supplemental learning resources.

Helpful Tips for Google Forms Assessments

Google Forms has transformed the way educators and trainers assess student understanding and gather feedback. To maximize its potential, it's important to understand some essential features that can streamline your process and enhance your workflow. Here are some valuable tips to keep in mind:

Always collect students' email addresses. It's your primary way to provide feedback.

To automate this, visit the Settings tab in your Google Form and toggle on “Collect email addresses by default.”

Instead of a single “name” field, create separate questions for the first and last names. This eases the sorting process later on.

Make these questions mandatory and set them to zero points.

If relevant, add an additional question asking students which class period they are in.

Navigate to the "Responses" tab in Google Form to review student performance and provide feedback.

Use the Summary view for an overview of how students fared.

The “Question” and “Individual” tabs let you delve deeper, allowing you to give feedback per question or per student.

To prevent further responses, toggle off the “Accepting responses” option in the Responses tab.

Take the quiz yourself before students do, entering "ANSWER" as the first name and "KEY" as the last. This provides a quick reference when reviewing responses but doesn't set the answer key.

The top row of the spreadsheet, which lists the questions, is frozen by default. If you've provided an "Answer Key," drag the freeze bar to encompass the second row as well. This ensures the questions and answers remain visible while scrolling.

Use the drop-down arrow in column headers to sort data by specific fields like Last Name or Period.

Sort individual questions to group students based on their answers. This can guide subsequent differentiated instruction.

For a more detailed sort (like by Period, Last Name, and then First Name), select the entire spreadsheet, access the Data menu, and choose “Sort range.”

Opt for “Advanced range sorting options,” ensuring the “Data has header row” is checked.

This feature can color-code cells based on student answers, helping you quickly identify correct or incorrect responses.

To implement, click a column header, right-click and select “Conditional formatting.”

Depending on your needs, choose appropriate conditions like “Text is exactly” or “Greater than.”
